SLAISers share some real life work experience in the library and archival field that they've acquired

Tell your fellow SLAIS schoolmates about the work experience you had during that summer co-op or about the awesome job you landed for the semester. Some things you might consider mentioning in your post (besides/in addition to bragging):

  • What kind of tasks did you perform during your employment?
  • What SLAIS courses did you find most relevant to your employment?
  • What skills would you like to see taught at SLAIS that would have come in handy?

Example:

"I worked in special library in a large mining company over the summer. I found the listing via the SLAIS jobs listserv, which had also been kindly forwarded by the SLAIS SLA chapter president at the time. I mainly helped the two librarians on staff collect relevant news stories (via Factiva, Google News, and other sources) that were then forwarded to company employees to help them keep up to date in developments in the field. I also helped catalogue textual materials, mainly monographs and serials, whose records were maintained using an Inmagic/DB Textworks database. Last semester, the SLA student chapter at SLAIS held a weekend workshop on using DB Textworks, which provided the basics of using this particular software. There was also some reference work involved, but most staff members tended to find resources on their own. It was a wonderful opportunity to see how a special library is run in the business world."
